The above interview was conducted in order to find out trends and popularities when it comes to certain genres of horror, and if age is a factor towards this. The first question that we asked was based on what horror genres the candidates enjoyed the most. When asking the question towards the younger candidates, we found that the majority of the candidates mentioned the paranormal genre, with one or two mentioning slashers, whereas the older candidates didn't have an opinion on this and doesn't enjoy watching horror films. This suggests that alot of younger people are watching paranormal-based horrors as they are jumpy and tense, finding this out meant that we could aim our films away from the paranormal genre as they are hugely popular in the current film market, and in creating more of a slasher film means there is enough popularity within the genre to get a good amount of views from the population as there is a gap within the current film market when it comes to the slasher genre.
Our next question asked the candidates what would make them go to watch the horror film itself. Answers were diverse, as most of the candidates mentioned that fact that a good trailer, that was scary or jumpy, would convince the candidates to watch the films, as it would be gripping and attractive. We aimed to achieve this with our OTS, as we have included several twists within out OTS to keep the audience entertained, and as our ending comes out of nowhere, it really surprises the audience, making them want to watch more.
We then asked the candidates what storyline would appeal to them, this is to try and find out if or OTS was on the right track when trying to attract the audience. Most of the candidates mentioned the fact that the film should be based on true events. This was a good find as our OTS is based upon a school shooting after a kid is consistently bullied, which is a very true occurrence across the US and the UK. One candidate suggested that the storyline could involve a surprise or twist towards the end, perfectly outlining the ending to our OTS, as it is unexpected to the untrained eye.
The candidates then answered a question based on what their desired antagonist was, a lot of the candidates mentioned a possessed character, with the minority mentioning clowns and ghost like characters. We decided to avoid this character type as we felt like our OTS should be unorthodox compared to the rest of the filming industry. Due to this gap in the filming industry, there would be a high demand for a new type of villain. Making this character means that our film would have a large popularity as audiences would be keen to see a new character entering the film industry, as this type of killer has never been used before.
