Classical Conventions are just the normal conventions used commonly in horror films. All of these conventions most of the time always appear in all horror films as a rule of thumb. we compacted these conventions down in to an easier way to remember them using the word distinct like an anagram and gave a brief example of what it could be.
D.I.S.T.I.N.C.T Don't Ignore Setting - A small secluded area, dark or narrow. Technical - Camera Angles - Low angle to show dominance, High angle to show vulnerability. Iconography - Colours and their connotations - A killer would be in dark clothing, not bright colours to represent who they are. Narrative - The closure, from the Final Girl Theory to the protagonist being killed. Characterisation - The main protagonist usually tries to be the hero type and are naive teenagers who do end up getting killed. Themes - Good vs Evil, Madness, Insanity, Paranormal, Slashers etc. |
